Since the wife is on her way back up to Estes Park it falls on me to update the blog with our happenings last night. Apparently, my wife cant do anything the easy way (guess she likes the drama) so we had another adventure last night. She woke up yesterday morning and noticed that she had about 4 contractions in an hour. Now, the doctor originally told us that she would feel contractions more and more as she got closer to the actual birth date but that if she had more than 5 in an hour she should give the doctor a call. So, anyway, she had 4 so it was all good... until the next 30 minutes when she had 5... "hmmm, suppose to call when you have 5 in an hour but I had 5 in 30 minutes, I should probably call." So, she called me because she was in Estes Park and I was in boulder and the reception sucked. What I heard when she called was "....... call...." That was about it the first time. Then I got a "...call doctor.......contractions......" Let me tell you that cell phones were invented by people who like chaos, "Hey, I have an idea for a device that will let you talk to people unless it is important. At that point I will have the device cut in an out just enough to where they hear enough to get worried"... stupid cell phones. Anyway, I reminded my self that I serve a God that is much bigger than me and I didn't worry that much. Eventually I got the story, called the doctor, and they told me that she should come in to the hospital. Elizabeth was already coming down for our last birthing class so it wasn't a big deal to have her come down. On her way down the mountain she only felt 2 contractions (it takes an hour or so to get down) so she called the doctor again and they said to come in after lunch, which was about 2:00ish. By the time she got to the hospital, she had had 4 more contractions in 30 minutes. I met her at the hospital and they hooked her up to a fetal heartbeat monitor and a contraction monitor. At this point let me explain something about hospitals being a "business". If a regular business was run like a hospital it wouldn't be in business for too long. Imagine if you will, a restaurant where they seat you right away but then take an hour to get you a menu, another 2 hours to get you food, and then after that they don't let you leave for another hour... I would say they would be out-of-business very quick. Now I guess that if the restaurant screws up your food then they can just cook you more but if a hospital screws up your life you are... well, screwed, but since this kind of negates my scenario lets ignore that fact. After Elizabeth got hooked up they monitored her for an hour or so and everything was good, although she did have a couple more contractions. The nurse then talked to the doctor (after a couple of hours) and, because she was still having contractions, the doctor came down around 5pm to do a test that shows the likelihood for having the baby in the next 2 weeks. That came back negative and her cervix wasn't dilated at all so the doctor wasn't to worried. She did say that once the uterus gets into the grove it just wants to keep going so they gave her a shot of something that relaxes the uterus and also has the lovely side affect of making your heartbeat increase and making you feel jittery (its similar to taking to many puffs of your asthma meds). They also gave Elizabeth pills that she has to take every 6 hours for the first 48 hours and then she can taper off. So, to make a long story short (boy am I way to late for that) she is fine (minus all the shakes, heartracing, weakness, & slight nausea from the meds), baby is fine, and assuming that her uterus stays calm, all is well.
I forgot to mention one thing. When we were in the hospital the baby decided to run laps or something for 45 minutes. Usually the baby moves a lot anyway so for us it wasn't anything out of the ordinary but the nurse was amazed at how much our baby moves, she hadn't seen a baby move that much before. Hmmm, so someone in our family is probably really fidgety and moves a lot... ummm....uhhhhh.... nope, no one comes to mind I guess its just a mystery where the baby gets that from.
