Prayer for China & Callen's in school

Today Elodie picked China off the VOM Persecuted Countries map to pray for. I told her about China's one child policy, heavy taxes that people can't afford for a second child, forced abortions (baby killing), and abandoning babies. This was her prayer: Dear Lord, Let the people who have two babies not kill the babies. Let them know you are real Lord. I love you Lord one hundred times more than I love my mommy. Amen.

Elodie did a perfect letter N in HWT.

Callen can say "mo" (more), "pee" (please), and "sssinky" (stinky).  He can breath through apple straws.  He wants to draw when Elodie is drawing for Kindergarten and he dances along with the school songs like "Frog Jump Letters," jumping at the jumping parts and putting both hands in the air when demonstrating the letters in the air.

He wanted to color like his sissy.

Naptime!

6/22/10...naptime diaper...

So I was getting ready to write a post about how L has NOT worn a nap time diaper in over two weeks and she's had no accidents. Well, that changed at nap today. I *think* the problem was that b/c she still had a fever she slept longer than her normal nap. She slept for 2.5-2.75hrs, instead of her usual 1.5-2 hrs. Anyway, we're not going back to diapers, so hopefully it was just a fluke. She asked tonight why she had to wear diapers at night and I told her she didn't have to if she could wake up to pee. We'll have that discussion with her doctor next week at her 3-year-old appointment, but my guess is there's no point in going diaper-free at night until she wakes up consistently with dry diapers (which I don't think has ever happened).

In other news, she still had a low fever today...in the 99s so we'll have to stay home another day tomorrow. She's still acting totally normal. She's watched tv, played with playd*h, rode her scooter around the house, played with her doll (actually mine from 30 yrs ago), etc.

We were watching T*y Story 2 today and I said, "I like this song," and Elodie replied, "This song is sad."  The funny thing is that it totally is this sad, melancholy song and she recognized that.

She also said, "I'm screwing the screwer," using her toy screw driver to screw in a screw.

Sunday, 11/8/09...zoo

Today was free day at the zoo again but winter hours started so this time the zoo didn't open until 10am. We got down there around 9:45am and the doors were already open. Both times before when we'd been to the zoo, we went clockwise around the zoo. This time, I wanted to take a right first since I knew the gorillas were some of L's favorites and we could do the cheetahs, kangaroos, elephants, hippo, rhinos, and bears on the way over to the monkeys and gorillas and then I wouldn't be tired and have my feet hurt by the time we got over there. It was a chilly day, but not as cold as two weeks ago. Dave and I wore hats, gloves, and coats, but L didn't want her hat or coat but we made her wear the gloves (to keep her hands warm and protected from all the germs!).

We had a great time at the zoo. We put the tray down on the stroller and L climbed in and out of the stroller the whole time we were there....out to see an animal and then back in to go on to the next one. It was really cute. After seeing a variety of monkeys, orangutans, and gorillas, we walked by some other animals, including a warthog and some zebras before seeing the $1 hotdogs. I was quite hungry so we stopped and ate lunch. L insisted on having ketchup on her hotdog, but made the strangest faces when she put more than just a tiny amount on her hotdog, yet she still wanted to eat it with the ketchup. Weird girl. After that, I was ready to go home, but we saw the giraffes (an L favorite), the tiger, and two leopards on the way out. We were able to get home in time to put L down for her nap, but she didn't fall asleep until really late so we didn't get up until late.

We had the Merrys over for dinner and had a fun time catching up with them. L had fun showing off for them and dancing in her underwear. Don't ask...she's a character!

Here's some of my favorites:

like my new hat? Nordstroms. :)

she really liked carrying around the map. I even said something about not knowing where something was and she handed me the map!

You can see the rest of the zoo pictures here along with the rest of this week's pictures so far (you can check back later to see if I added more pics).

Wed., 7/22/09...Candy & allergy testing...

This morning I ran around like a mad lady trying to buy all the fresh fruit & veggies so that i could wash them all and cut little slivers of each to put in labeled zip lock baggies (while washing the knife in between as not to cross contaminate) for my food allergy puddle tests this afternoon. I got done just in time to rush out the door. My appt. was in Lowry in Denver so it was a bit of a drive. I got tested, I itched, etc. I now have a list of foods to NEVER eat, a list to eat w/ caution, a list to monitor my reaction to, and a list to cut out completely and then reintroduce individually over time & monitor my reaction. I start allergy shots in two weeks for my pluthera of environmental allergies. And I'm supposed to be taking my peak flows every day before & after I take my Advair.

While I was doing all that, D's aunt Candy was kind enough to come watch L. We LOVE Candy and L really LOVES her too. When Candy got here, L wouldn't let Candy put her down. Too cute! Anyhow, apparently L didn't nap and just stayed in her crib for an hour and 45 min saying things like, "candy come here," "candy up here," and "No nap!" When she finally got her up, L said, "where mommy?" Candy said watching her now that she talks in sentences is a whole new world. :) D's uncle Dale dropped by around dinner time b/c he was working at Rocky Mtn Airport (he works for the FAA out by DIA) & wanted to see L. We had a great time visiting w/them before they had to leave, but I think L felt a little left out as she sat in her highchair w/her fingers in her ears screaming.

Showing off her bandaid for a fake booboo so she can be like Auntie Candy. She LOVES rummaging through Auntie Candy's purse for forbidden objects :)

L's potty skills are going pretty well. She held her peed the whole morning while we were on errands (got up around 7:30am and peed at 11:20am). She peed on the floor a couple times today while sitting on the potty so I'm not exactly sure how that happened other than to guess she wasn't sitting back far enough on the potty when she peed...it's never happened before. She also told D twice during her bath "pee pee potty" and D took her out of the bath & she peed on the toliet and then continued w/her bath.

D's still got his cold after a week so I called his Dr. for him (he said he'd call next week!) and they think it's bacterial so they put him on an antibiotic...we're hoping that he gets well quick as all this congestion, headache, sore throat, sick thing kinda sucks.

Wednesday, 9/3/08

i don't know why i think this view is so cute but i do :)

pants borrowed from cousin Sara

tried to get a pic where you could see her cute top. her grammie got it for her...it says Festival of the Arts, Laguna Beach, CA.

Today she tried grapes for the first time. She ate them but don't know how much she really liked them. The last couple weeks she's started getting picky and eating a lot less than she did before.

She took a better nap today since she hasn't really gotten a good nap in like 5 days.

Oh, and I think she took her official first step but I'm not positive so we'll just have to wait and see if she does it again. She was standing holding on to the couch and she stepped forward and then sat into a pile of pillows so I have no idea if it was intentional or not.

Our 14-month-old: Week 3‏

Your 14-month-old's language and cognitive development: Say it again ... and again

"Ball," "dog," and "bye" may be your child's favorite — and only — words at this point, though some early talkers may have as many as 20 words in their vocabulary. Maybe she uses the words at the right time for the right things, or maybe she says "dog" when she sees other furry animals with tails. Don't be discouraged — that's an indication that she's learning to group things together. Just say the correct word in a matter-of-fact tone ("That's a horse, honey; horses are bigger than dogs"), and she'll soon pick it up.

New this month: Say it again ... and again
At 14 months, your toddler understands many more words than she can say. Her spoken vocabulary likely consists of about three to five words, typically "Mama," "Dada," and one other simple word such as "ball" or "dog," but she learns the meanings of new words every day. **Elodie says "mommy" and "hi" and used to say "mama" and "dada."** As she starts to add words to her vocabulary, you'll notice that she looks for opportunities to practice them. Once she can say "dog," for instance, she'll look for dogs everywhere — in books, outside, on videos — just so she can point and say the word over and over again.

What you can do
Rhymes, jingles, and silly songs are big hits with toddlers. If your 14-month-old is already speaking several words, encourage her willingness to repeat after you by singing silly or repetitive songs, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." As she becomes familiar with the refrains she'll chime in one word at a time and before you know it she'll be singing the whole song right along with you. **we sing old macdonald a lot b/c my dad & jan got her the book.**

If your 14-month-old isn't speaking many words at this point, you can help her with the other two elements of language acquisition. When talking to your child, vary your tone, facial expressions, and hand gestures, all of which will help her understand the meanings of your words. Maintain eye contact when you talk to her so she learns to listen to you. And don't rush her when she is trying to use words — listen patiently and look her in the eye.

Other developments: Communicating with gestures, hide-and-seek fun
Now that your toddler can indicate her needs with actions and some words, expect her to use "tools" to help her communicate. She'll bring you her jacket to let you know she wants to go outside. Or she'll point to a CD that she would like to hear. She is trying hard to make you understand what she wants. And you can expect her to repeat many words she hears even though she doesn't know their meaning (so starting now you need to watch what you say, lest your little parrot repeat any swear words!).

Her ability to remember people, places, and events gets stronger every day. This month she may even be able to respond to two-part requests, such as to go to her room and fetch her shoes or a toy, or retrieve a lost pacifier. **After nap time every day, she's thrown her stuffed animals out of the crib. So I tell her to go get them, and one by one, she'll crawl in the corner or under the crib, retreive it, hand it to me, and then go back for the next one. It's really cute.**

Hide-and-seek is still very entertaining, especially if your 14-month-old gets to do the seeking. Here's a variation that's sure to evoke lots of laughter: Show your toddler a toy and then stash it in your pocket and ask her where it went. She has the cognitive power to realize that just because the toy is out of sight doesn't mean it's gone. She'll giggle as she searches your pocket, purse, or backpack to see where you've hidden the toy. You can also hide little toys in her own pockets and see how much fun she has trying to get them out.
