1/6/11...C gets croup
Last night (Wed. 1/5), I spent 3.5 hrs in the ER with C b/c he woke up at 1:27am with croup. We tried the humidified shower air but he just kept screaming and was getting worse so I took him to the ER. They took a while to give him meds and then he promptly threw them up so he had to get a steroid shot and tylenol suppository. He weighed 15.5 lbs with his diaper & pjs on. When the meds kicked in, he finally calmed down and stopped crying. It was really hard to see my normally easy going guy all upset. When we got home at 6am, I nursed him a little to get him to go back to sleep and then woke him up at 9am so his schedule wasn't too off.

Wed., 12/30/09...Richeys head out fast!
Well with all the action of last night, the Richeys decided that if their kids hadn't already caught it (they'd all been exposed) that they didn't want their kids to get croup so they packed up and headed out a day early. We were sad to see them leave but didn't want their kids to get sick either.
L was much better today. We just needed to make sure we gave her the second dose of oral steroid at dinnertime so that the croup didn't reappear tonight. She's a smart girl though, and even though I mixed the nasty tasting medicine in with some applesauce, she said the applesauce was yucky and I took all of this mama's finesse to get her to eat it.
Dave was exhausted and so was I. After a full day at work, Dave went to bed at 8pm and I went to bed around 9pm (I had gotten a nap).

Tuesday, 12/29/09...Butterfly Pavilion, Croup, & a trip to the ER...
Today we went to the Butterfly Pavilion with everyone (Dave took the day off work). When we got there we attended a little game of jeopardy with lots of bug/insect info. It was too "old" for the Richey kids but L sat there really nicely until she realized her cousins weren't. Anyhow, I found it interesting and that's what counts, right? ;)
After that, we toured the tarantula, spiders, & cockroaches room, where you could hold a live tarantula. All the young ones and not-so-young-ones passed on that! L said a lot of "big spider" and "very big spider." ;)

gross!

Then we moved on to some of the fish tanks and an open tank where the girls touched star fishes with the backs of their fingers.

Then it was time for the butterfly part. L absolutely loved this part, even though she thought they were attacking her and kept running from them. The girls went crazy in here. They ran all over the place and left us to run all over the place after them. We didn't even get a family pic in here because L was upset we disturbed her running around. And then when it came time to leave, L threw a fit and cried a bunch (but mommy was really hot in her winter clothes in this humid/hot room so mommy won out).
I wasn't so sure if any of these pics would turn out since it was SO humid in there that it steamed up my camera lens and I had to wipe it down.

Then we went into this sort-of interactive room that was a little too "old" for the kiddos but they enjoyed running around, sorting these wooden circles, putting their faces in the caterpillar holes, and throwing bean bags.

couldn't quite get everyone doing it all at once!

That afternoon while L & Cadence were napping, Dave and I got to hear all the super neato things that God is doing in Andrew's life in relation to his ministry with a certain population and in preparing for their move to a country far away.
After we put the kids to bed, we all watched Night At The Museum 2, but we were interrupted around 10pm by L crying. Dave went up to discover that she had thrown up a little bit (mostly mucus) and that she said she was "choking." She sounded HORRIBLE. I thought she sounded like croup but she was wheezing so we gave her a breathing treatment for the first time while we finished the movie.

She has her hands over her ears because she thinks the movie is too loud.
We were concerned about her so we decided that Dave would sleep in her room with her (she's in her crib & Dave was in the bed). Around 2:30am, she started to cry and it's that barking-like-a-seal cry that is classic croup...except she wasn't just barking. She was wheezing. Bad. So bad that Dave came into our room and said he was really concerned. He was so upset he couldn't even call the doctor so I did. They called right back and I told the nurse what was going on and put the phone up to L so she could hear her breathing. She said to turn the shower on hot and sit in the steamy bathroom with her for 20 minutes and see if it helped. The nurse would call back in 20 minutes. Told us if she turned blue to call 911. Could have dealt without that piece of worrisome information! Longest 20 minutes of my life. L didn't appear to be getting any better and we were praying, praying, praying. The nurse called back and listened to L over the phone and said we needed to go to the hospital now. She'd call ahead for us. So off we went (poked my head in Amanda's room & told her)...it was a little after 3am.
At the hospital they called us back quickly, took L's stats and put us in a kiddie room. The doctor came in pretty quick and told us what we suspected...it was croup. They got her on a breathing treatment (steroids to take down the inflammation of the larynx and trachea). Trying to get her to breath the mist coming from the tube was difficult. She kept turning her head away. We should have asked for a mask since she did so well with one at home but they're used to kids who don't like masks so they didn't use one. After awhile, she seemed to be getting better and they forced her to take another medication orally. She really didn't like the taste and literally spit it out in the nurse's face. After all that, we were discharged. We went straight to Walm*rt to buy a humidifier for her room since the doctor said that would help a ton. I slept the rest of the night with her since Dave had to be at work in a couple hours.
