Testing, testing...
By now, you may have already told your baby that the telephone is not a toy, or that rattles are not for throwing, or that her sister's hair is not for pulling. At this age your baby may begin testing your authority by refusing to follow your simple directions. She's not really being disobedient or willful — just curious.
Keep in mind that she also simply can't remember things you tell her for more than a couple of seconds at a time. The best tactic is to use a simple "no" and then distract her.
Figuring out how objects relate
Your baby's beginning to understand how objects relate to one another in three-dimensional space. She may be able to sort toys, grouping smaller items by size. Babies instinctively combine objects by stacking them and, as they get older, trying to fit them inside one another.
If your baby admires her reflection in a mirror and you suddenly appear behind her image, she's likely to turn and look for you instead of believing that you're in the mirror itself.
A simple game of peek-a-boo might be absolutely fascinating to your baby. That's because she's starting to understand object permanence (that an object she can't see can still exist) and loves games in which people or things appear and disappear.
Your baby can now straighten her back and twist her trunk as she sits. This ability enables her to sit for longer periods of play.

Saturday, January 26th:

She thinks she's so clever because she can push the buttons on our stereo...and open the cd drawer...and the tape deck.

yes, she's sucking on the open tape deck...

bathtime

a new onesie (which of course she covered up with her arms, but it says in cute lettering, "mommy & daddy love me")

Elodie's room...
So we finally got around to putting up the airplane shelf that Dave's mom got us last summer! And after straightening up Elodie's room, I thought I'd post some pictures. :)

Here's the right side of her room.

A closer look at the shelf, with books and stuffed animals; her airplane mobile (complements of the Chapmans); the wall hanging my mom made for me when I was born; and Dave's old crib. You can't see the sheets, but there are airplanes on them as well. :)

The left side of her room. You can't tell, but the striped basket on the changing table has a liner in it with an embroidered airplane. :)

before & after

Dave working on wiring

wires hanging out of ceiling. i cut holes in the ceiling and stuck a broomhandle through the holes so he'd know where the holes were under all the insulation in the attic. then he moved all the insulation out of the way and stuck wiring through the holes.

cutting circles

the finished product ;)

We did it!
or I should say, Dave did it! (but with my assistance) We installed recessed lighting in our loft/office! We only had a sconce light and a lamp in there and it was so poorly lit. I begged and begged and finally Dave caved! :) We worked on it a little on Saturday, mainly buying what we needed and then worked on it all day yesterday (in between caring for L). We got half the lights to work by 8 pm last night but then the last two wouldn't work and we had run out of time by 10pm. So tonight Dave checked the connections and tried one more thing and voila, it worked! I still think it needs more light (i guess i just like it bright) but it's way better than what it was like. I'll try to post before and after pics later.
In other news, I dropped my camera tonight :( (in my attempt to kept L from eating it) and the little button that kept the battery in its place and you pushed it to eject the battery broke off. I'm still not sure how it happened but obviously the hatch that keeps the battery and memory card protected opened and somehow the latch got broke. Anyhow, I was able to close the hatch and the camera still works but the battery it loose inside. :(
Last Thursday through Saturday, L cried through her afternoon naps and didn't sleep at all. The only thing I could think of that coincided with this change was the introduction of green beans. So yesterday I didn't give her any green beans (or bananas since that was the previously introduced food) and she cried for about 20 minutes (which is way longer than normal) but she did end up falling asleep and slept for about 45 minutes (which was way better than nothing). The good news is that today for her afternoon nap there was minimal fussing and she slept for almost the full two hours. Yea! So eventually I'll reintroduce the green beans and bananas separately to see if it was related or not. For now, I think her next food will be sweet potatoes. I need to find another green veggie so she doesn't get sick of peas since I like giving her one fruit, one green and one yellow veggie per day so she gets "balanced" "meals."
Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to post some pics but I'm off to bed since this weekend wiped me out and tomorrow I have Bible study so that takes up about half my day and I need to get some rest for that. ;)

L's 7 months old!

Your 7-month-old's development: Week 1
Recognition skills
Your baby now actively engages in hiding games. Place one of his favorite toys on the floor and cover it with a napkin. Pull the napkin off and say, "There it is!" Cover it again and repeat.
For more fun, hide an object under something and wait for him to discover it. It's one of the easiest ways to keep your baby occupied!
Your baby can remember that the jack-in-the-box pops up at the end of the song — yet he'll still laugh every time. He's also able to recognize different tones and inflections and may burst into tears if you speak harshly.
Stimulating toys and games
Because he likes predictability, your baby enjoys playing the same game or reading the same book over and over. In addition to patty-cake, try adding classics such as "If You're Happy and You Know It" and "This Little Piggy" to your repertoire.
Sippy time
Your baby may have already started feeding himself finger foods, although this can begin as late as 10 months. Once he reaches this stage, you can introduce a sippy cup.
Try giving him a cup with a spout and two handles. If your baby's getting frustrated that he can't get more liquid out of the sippy cup, remove the valve in the top of the cup. If your baby's having trouble figuring out how to suck through the spout, take the lid off the sippy cup and let him first drink straight from the cup (show him how to tip it back so the drink flows into his mouth). **L LOVES to drink water from a glass. I'm not planning on giving her a sippy cup...just a cup w/a straw...it's supposed to be better for her development.
Switching your baby to a cup sooner rather than later might make it easier for him to give up the bottle. If you're breastfeeding, you can even bypass the bottle altogether and go straight to a cup.
After your baby masters the ability to grasp an object, an exciting step follows: transferring it from one hand to the other. For now, your baby will experiment so much with both hands that you won't have a clue if she's a righty or a lefty. In fact, handedness doesn't usually become obvious until much later. A preference might become apparent around 9 months, but even then, little ones tend to be ambidextrous, sometimes until they start school. **L's been transferring back and forth for maybe 2 months now?

our little one...
So we put L on the scale today, and she weighs 17.4lbs, which according to the chart in the book is in the 30th/ish percentile. No wonder her 9 month clothing is big! Guess she's taking after her mama after all! :) She'll be 7 months this Friday.
1/10:

I love my rings & maraca. We just got her the maracas and drum set (from costco on sale!) and she seems to like them. One of the maracas rattles and the other and the drum make noise in english or spanish. This cute outfit (from grammie ann) is 12 month so it's still a little big, but she can still wear it.
1/11:

Her new hat. It's totally cute but it stays on for all of 3 seconds b/c she gets a hold of the big ball and rips it right off! The little fleece outfit is from my dad's fiance Jan. :)
1/12:

having fun w/daddy

In a jumper from when I was her age (that means it's 28 years old!)

L & grandpa Mike
1/13:

New outfit from grandma Karen :) Here you can see the carter's 9 month stuff is still a little big (or at least the fleece stuff; fleece doesn't shrink, whereas all the cotton stuff does at least a little depending on the brand). You can't really see the socks but they are adorable (from gg ethel). They look like pink mary janes w/rhinestones.

Rolling over...
L is now quite proficient at moving around. She can roll until she hits the entertainment center, the bar stools, and the couch in the family room and until she's under the swing or the jumperoo, or hits the filing cabinet in the loft. Good thing we went out this week to get a gate for the stairs. Now I need to get netting for the loft railing so she can't fall through!
In food news, she's now had pears, squash, carrots, oatmeal, and today peas. I'd say she likes the pears and carrots, is ok with squash and oatmeal, and she's not so sure about the peas...but she always has interesting expressions (ok, priceless expressions!!) when introducing a new food. We're hoping to do rice cereal (organic brown) and bananas next but it takes awhile to introduce food when you only give it to her once per day and have to wait days in between to make sure there is no reaction.
She likes two fisting toys...she likes having one in each hand and sometimes banging them together. She absolutely LOVES pulling hair. Dave lets her pull his hair so I've pulled mine back permenantly but she still manages to get her hands on it if she can. On New Year's Eve, we had some friends over and L kept pulling their 18 mo. old's hair. She just went straight for it so I had to move her so she was sitting out of arm's reach from her.
Her spitting up is very minimal...maybe once every few days, if that...and has been that way probably since she was 5 months?
In any case, she's a real joy and we try to enjoy every moment, even when she's difficult (well, i do...i don't think dave does).
well, off to bed...i've caught a cold so i should get to bed (although i hardly slept at all last night...i think it was the sudafed)!
