5/31/12: Faith of a child

We read a book about India tonight.  There was a section on religions of India, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.  I said something like "none of those people who follow those religions know Jesus and that's why Amanda and Andrew are in India, to tell people about Jesus."  At the mention of Jesus, Callen signed "pray" (which I saw him do for the first time last week when Elodie was sick... I had said that Elodie was sick and that we needed to be praying for her and he put his hands together in the pray position and that's when I realized he could sign "pray") so I said, "did you want to pray?"  And Elodie said, "let's pray for those people!"  So she bowed her head (with Callen still hands clasped in "pray") and said, "Dear Jesus, Help these people believe in you Lord. Amen."  Amen daughter!  Amen!

As a side note, Callen points to Amanda's Christmas card photo on the fridge everyday so everyday I tell him who everyone in the photo is. :)  He's also especially interested in Bekham's photo since our trip to Steamboat. :)

1/26/12: C signs "book"

Today, out of the blue, Callen signed "book" over and over and over throughout the day. Guess he's got that one down. The funny thing is that you give him a book and then he signs "book" again so you start to read it to him, but then he wants down. He has no patience to actually be read a book. :)

Saturday, 12/26/09...presents & snow...

Since we didn't have time to open presents here before we left in a mad dash for Dave's mom's yesterday, we opened the presents under the tree this morning. L got a ton of dvds and a book from Opa & Nonna (my dad & stepmom); a baby doll that makes noises, bassinet, & small blocks from Grandpa House & Mimi (Dave's dad & stepmom); and kitchen pots, pans, & utensils, and a my little p*ny from us.

Cookbook from his dad :)

Then we made sure to get in some outdoor play time for L. She really wanted to ride her bike in the snow. Who says a trike is a summertime toy?!!

Wed., 8/5/09...Jumping video...

Today L & I hung out with our neighbor and his kids and some other neighborhood kids. Our neighbor and I played frisbee (who knew?? i can throw & catch!), while the older girls chased L around. It was quite warm so I got my workout.

Today, L sang over and over the "rain is falling down" song from PBS.

Here's a video of L dancing (bouncing) to the Elmo cd that Phyllis got her for her birthday:

And I finally figured out how to adjust the strength of the flash manually :)

7/18/09...quite the talker...

L's becoming quite the talker now. She has so many words and puts full sentences together (even if they're not quite right)...so much so that I can't remember to write down all the cute things she says. Tonight while I was out on errands, D put her to bed. During bedtime prayers she said, "Dear Jesus. Mommy home safe. Amen." How cute is that? The home safe thing started b/c she likes to pray for her Opa (my dad...he came to visit at the right time of her development and she's latched onto him!). This week she wanted to pray for Opa so I said "we pray that Opa gets home safe" (he was in Hawaii) and apparently that stuck with her. Tonight at dinner she said, "Mommy home safe. L-dee home safe. Daddy home safe." Anyhow, we thank Jesus A LOT for Opa and Auntie K ("K-K")....occasionally she throws in other family members like mommy & daddy, grammie, grandma, grandpa, etc. She also thanks Jesus for random inanimate things from the day like rocks. The other night after she farted really loud she said, "big fart right there." She also likes to say, "mommy (or daddy) sit down...right there." D warned her this week that something was hot so now if something comes out of the oven or microwave or off the stove, she says, "careful hot."

She can also put on her own shoes and if you tell her they're on the wrong feet, she'll switch them.

She's quite the climber too. For awhile now, she's been able to climb up into our bar stools (they're counter height), which doesn't make mommy or daddy very happy b/c of course we think she'll fall someday. She can also climb in and out of her high chair by herself, even when it's at the highest height...although she fell while getting out this week and so now she won't get out by herself & will stand there saying "no fall...no fall." I've lowered it again (it got raised by accident while some company were here) so she can get in and out if she wants.

Oh, and this morning D was trying to read her a board book that is in French and she said, "No. Mommy read it." LOL! I guess she didn't like D's attempt at French. So I came over and we read the book at least three times!

Every time my mom (grammie) calls, L will say "no doubt" b/c my mom sings her this song, "I love you there's no doubt about it..." If you ask L who taught her about butterflies, she'll say "grandma." She definitely remembers a ton now!

She really LOVES to be outside, which baffles her indoor parents, but we go with it b/c it gets us out and we know how cranky she gets if she's cooped up inside all day!

Thursday, 9/4/08 crawling up the stairs...

L crawled up the whole staircase today for the first time totally unassisted and unmotivated. Before, we always had to have something she wanted a couple stairs above her and keep moving it so she'd go up. Usually she'd get half way by herself and then get scared so we'd have to put stuff in front of her to keep her moving. Well, today there was absolutely nothing on the stairs and she crawled all the way to the top and then through the gate and into her room. :)

She had a bunch of grapes today. She kept asking for more so I guess she likes them. She even got to one of them before I had a chance to cut it in half (you're supposed to to reduce choking hazard) but she bit it in half and didn't try to eat it whole so that was good.

She's definitely taller than she used to be...either that or smarter b/c she's getting into a lot more than she used to. She can now reach the third shelf on the bookcase, not just the bottom two, which means she's pulled stuff off that she's not supposed to like picture frames, pictures, and books. She's also figured out how to pull all the cd jewels off the bookcase. And today she figured out how to pull on of my photo albums off the shelf, which of course is a BIG no, no! She also can open and close one of the filing cabinet drawers and one of D's desk drawers that has all his computer games in it. She likes opening and closing the cases that the games come in and she got the cds out of one of them yesterday...I'm sure D will love that when he finds out (not!). A couple weeks ago, I realized that she's capable of responding to the command, "put that back," whether she does it or not is a whole 'nother story.

Her favorite sign is still "book," which she signs all day long!

She didn't like the grass touching her feet. D says she's just like me (grass is so itchy!!). ;) So I put her feet up on the wings of the airplane and she was ok.

she really wanted the phone!

talking on the phone. I tried to get some without the phone but she cried so that was no good.

Our 14-month-old: Week 3‏

Your 14-month-old's language and cognitive development: Say it again ... and again

"Ball," "dog," and "bye" may be your child's favorite — and only — words at this point, though some early talkers may have as many as 20 words in their vocabulary. Maybe she uses the words at the right time for the right things, or maybe she says "dog" when she sees other furry animals with tails. Don't be discouraged — that's an indication that she's learning to group things together. Just say the correct word in a matter-of-fact tone ("That's a horse, honey; horses are bigger than dogs"), and she'll soon pick it up.

New this month: Say it again ... and again
At 14 months, your toddler understands many more words than she can say. Her spoken vocabulary likely consists of about three to five words, typically "Mama," "Dada," and one other simple word such as "ball" or "dog," but she learns the meanings of new words every day. **Elodie says "mommy" and "hi" and used to say "mama" and "dada."** As she starts to add words to her vocabulary, you'll notice that she looks for opportunities to practice them. Once she can say "dog," for instance, she'll look for dogs everywhere — in books, outside, on videos — just so she can point and say the word over and over again.

What you can do
Rhymes, jingles, and silly songs are big hits with toddlers. If your 14-month-old is already speaking several words, encourage her willingness to repeat after you by singing silly or repetitive songs, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." As she becomes familiar with the refrains she'll chime in one word at a time and before you know it she'll be singing the whole song right along with you. **we sing old macdonald a lot b/c my dad & jan got her the book.**

If your 14-month-old isn't speaking many words at this point, you can help her with the other two elements of language acquisition. When talking to your child, vary your tone, facial expressions, and hand gestures, all of which will help her understand the meanings of your words. Maintain eye contact when you talk to her so she learns to listen to you. And don't rush her when she is trying to use words — listen patiently and look her in the eye.

Other developments: Communicating with gestures, hide-and-seek fun
Now that your toddler can indicate her needs with actions and some words, expect her to use "tools" to help her communicate. She'll bring you her jacket to let you know she wants to go outside. Or she'll point to a CD that she would like to hear. She is trying hard to make you understand what she wants. And you can expect her to repeat many words she hears even though she doesn't know their meaning (so starting now you need to watch what you say, lest your little parrot repeat any swear words!).

Her ability to remember people, places, and events gets stronger every day. This month she may even be able to respond to two-part requests, such as to go to her room and fetch her shoes or a toy, or retrieve a lost pacifier. **After nap time every day, she's thrown her stuffed animals out of the crib. So I tell her to go get them, and one by one, she'll crawl in the corner or under the crib, retreive it, hand it to me, and then go back for the next one. It's really cute.**

Hide-and-seek is still very entertaining, especially if your 14-month-old gets to do the seeking. Here's a variation that's sure to evoke lots of laughter: Show your toddler a toy and then stash it in your pocket and ask her where it went. She has the cognitive power to realize that just because the toy is out of sight doesn't mean it's gone. She'll giggle as she searches your pocket, purse, or backpack to see where you've hidden the toy. You can also hide little toys in her own pockets and see how much fun she has trying to get them out.

Friday, 8/22/08 read Old Macdonald book...

Today L wanted me to read her the Old Macdonald book my dad got her over and over and over and over.
