taking our blog private

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE email me if you like to still read our blog and I'll send you an invite after we make it private.

We had a scary thing happen to D's grandma where someone called her pretending to be D and telling her that he was in a ton of trouble and asked her to wire him money. The person knew our names and obviously his grandma's name & ph #. There are lots of ways to get that kind of info but the guy also said we'd just been to a wedding. Could be a total coincidence but it freaked us out and rocked our privacy to the core. So we've decided to take our blog private. This means that you'll have to log in to read it w/the email address that you give us. If you don't have a google ID, you can make one without getting a gmail (google mail) email address.

I've held off making this private b/c I think private blogs are a pain for the readers, but this incident put me over the top. We need to try to protect our family as much as we can.

Thanks for your understanding.

Wed., 8/26/09...allergy testing for L...

L got her skin allergy testing done today. They tested her for some environmental stuff, cats, dogs, tree nuts, cashew, almond, peanuts, strawberries, shellfish, fish, soy, and egg. Praise Jesus! The only one she reacted to was egg. I sat in the office praising God over and over for sparing L (at least for the present time) from any major allergies. I guess (for now) all those prayers worked! They did say that she could develop allergies to foods that she hasn't eaten or to environmental stuff over time.

The next step for the egg allergy is to do an in office food challenge, where I bring in two cooked scrambled eggs and they make her eat some every 15-20 min. over two hours to see if she reacts. I have this scheduled for Friday morning. They said the sooner the better since the flu vaccine has egg in it and even though she'd gotten the flu shot twice before & was fine, there's no way to know how much egg is in each vaccine. Because of that, they would make her have a flu tolerance test or something like that and if she reacted, they'd give her the flu vaccine over multiple shots instead of just one. The whole point in telling you this is that I wanted all of us to get the shots as soon as my dr.'s office got them in in Sept. (where everyone else doesn't get them until Oct.) and they didn't want me to let her get it in Sept. w/o knowing the results of the egg food challenge...thus the appt. this Friday so we'll know.

Even though she didn't test positive to other foods, but because she hasn't been exposed to them yet (fish, shellfish, tree nuts, or peanuts), the dr. prescribed an epi-pen for L so that if and when we introduce those foods in the future, that if she had a bad reaction, we'd have the medicine to save her life.

The other thing they're going to treat her for is exercise-induced asthma. I already had a nebulizer delivered to my door this afternoon. They faxed the prescription for the inhaled steroids to the mail away pharmacy so they'll hopefully come sometime next week. Should be interesting getting our jitterbug to sit still twice a day for 15 minutes each to get her treatments.

Overall, I'm super happy with the outcome. I'm thanking Jesus over and over for protecting my baby. Let's continue to pray that she doesn't develop any allergies over time!

More Elodie from today:
I told her, "You can have five stickers," and she replied, "No. 6."  Also, she peed on the big potty (no seat help) three times today, once at Q*uiznos and twice at home.

Wed., 8/26/09...the painting is done...

They finished painting our house today. I really like it...those shutters & the door are black. It's weird to think that our house isn't that totally faded blue/gray anymore!

8/26/09...righty or lefty

from babycenter.com:
By now your child's eye color and hair color are probably fixed (and may be different from what they were at birth). Left- or right-handedness is a trait that takes a bit longer to figure out, but you'll get plenty of clues this year. Watch which hand your child uses to pick up a spoon at meals or a ball on the playground. She's beginning to favor her dominant hand, left or right, this year.

our 2-year-old now
During the past year, you may have noticed your toddler beginning to favor one hand over another for things like eating or reaching. (Babies tend to use their hands interchangeably.) This coming year, use of the dominant hand will become more consistent and you'll probably know for sure whether your child is left-handed or right-handed. Not sure yet? Try this: Hold out a toy and see which hand she uses to reach for it. Watch which hand she picks up her spoon with at meals. The dominant hand is usually stronger and has more dexterity, so it's the one she'll be likely to use. **we're wondering if L will be a lefty.**

A minority of kids remain ambidextrous, meaning they use both hands equally, until kindergarten. Some children use a dominant hand for eating and writing but the other hand for throwing a ball. Handedness is largely genetic. Only about one in 10 people are left-handed, but if both parents are lefties there's a 50 percent chance their child will be, too.

Don't try to change your child's inborn preference. Forcing a child to use the nondominant hand can create a lot of frustration and expend energy that could be going toward improving skills and learning.

Your life now
As your preschooler grows bigger and faster, take a tour of your home from her point of view. Hazards to a super-curious, super-mobile explorer include standing pails of water (a drowning risk) and drawers that could pinch fingers or that contain sharp objects (consider a new, higher round of drawer locks). Remove cleansers and poisons from reach, and put the poison control phone numbers on your phone or fridge. Accidents may increase because busy preschoolers focus more on where they're going than what's in their way. Keep floors clear of throw rugs, toys, and other tripping hazards. Be sure you're well-stocked with bandages, antibiotic ointment, and kisses for treating those inevitable scratches and scrapes.
**We really need to get the magnetic child safety locks as L discovered a long time ago how to open the regular child safety locks. And she moves stepstools around so she can reach things. And she can climb on chairs, her high chair, or bar stools to get onto the counter. She's a total climber!**

8/26/09...our 2 yr old...No Comparison

from babycenter.com:

It's tempting to compare your preschooler with his playmates, but it's not constructive. At this age, kids start developing in wildly different ways. Some focus fiercely on language or motor skills for a time while other skills stagnate. And new skills are acquired at a whole range of "normal" rates. Trust your gut: Does your child seem okay to you? Whenever you have any doubt, don't hesitate to mention it to his doctor.

Your 2-year-old now
How can you tell if your preschooler is on track developmentally? By age 2, children begin to diverge widely in the rates at which they pick up new skills. That said, the American Academy of Pediatrics has a list of milestones that most children reach by their second birthday. Your 2-year-old should be able to:
  • Point to an object that you name.
  • Recognize the names of familiar people, objects, and body parts.
  • Use short phrases and two- to four-word sentences.
  • Follow simple instructions.
  • Repeat words he overhears.
  • Find an object even if you hide it under two or three blankets.
  • Sort objects by shape or color. (**to L, all colors are green or purple.**)
  • Play make-believe.
If you're worried that your preschooler seems behind, mention it to his doctor. The best way to diagnose a problem is through professional assessment and continued observation — together with your input, of course, since nobody knows your child as well as you do.

Your life now
Your little shadow is not just following you everywhere — he's watching you closely, too. Should you conceal your stronger emotions from him? Not in most cases. It's good for him to understand that people express their feelings. Give a simple explanation: "I was crying because I missed Daddy and it made me sad. But now I feel better. Let's have a big hug and I'll really feel great, then we can have lunch!" If you have an angry outburst, reassure him so he's not frightened. (All parents lose it sometimes, even though your goal is to be as calm and rational as possible.) Your child is now developing a strong sense of empathy.

8/26/08...our 2 yr old... Ask Me Anything

from babycenter.com:

"Why, Mommy?" "Why?" "Why?" Questions are probably your preschooler's new favorite form of speech. And there's a reason for that: Asking is a good way of finding out, and your child is constantly coming across new situations he wants to know more about. Although endless questions can get wearisome — especially if you have a tenacious, super-curious child — answering them simply and patiently encourages your child to keep asking and learning.
**L doesn't ask "why" yet but she does point to EVERYTHING and say "that" (her version of "what's that?" She'll also point out when things are loud.)**

Your 2-year-old now
Your little one's a budding conversationalist, even if you're the one doing most of the talking. He's beginning to ask lots of questions, a development that fills two needs for him: It's a way of finding out about things, and it's also a way of keeping the interchange with you going. That lets him engage with you longer and pick up even more words.

Early favorite questions include "Why?" and "What's that?" (Or simply, "Dat? Dat?") As his language skills grow more sophisticated, so will his questions: "What's making that sound?" "What if the car went off the road?" "Why don't the birds fall down?"

Try to answer his questions as quickly as you can, in simple, full sentences. "Birds have wings that keep them up in the air." Being responsive encourages future questions, and your answers help him learn from your example how to put sentences together. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know." Find a book on the subject to share.

Your preschooler loves to answer questions as much as ask them. When you're reading books, ask about the pictures or the story: "Where is the brown doggie?" "What do you think he likes to eat?" "What will happen next?"

Your life now
Preschoolers don't always move on the same timetable as grown-ups. They get easily distracted on their way to the dinner table. They insist on putting on socks "by self" regardless of how long it takes. Even the most patient parents can feel sorely tested, especially if they're running late!

Instead of coaxing your 2-year-old to hurry, stop and ask yourself if you can spare the time to let your child do things at his own pace. Do you really need to go to the park right now? It can help to take some deep breaths, exhaled sloooowly. Or count to ten to try to slow yourself down. When you're really in a rush, it's okay to jump in and move your child along, especially if you give him the benefit of his own preschooler timetable on less-busy days.

**I'm loving this age (although I know I've thought this about every age since she was about 4 months old). She's a real little person now. We have conversations all day long. She's my little companion. :) Yes, sometimes it feels like she's crying, screaming, or having a tandrum for 90% of the day, and I do loose my cool sometimes, but mostly God's giving me amazing patience and grace and the know-how to deal with her. Thank you Jesus for my beautiful daughter! I love her more than I knew I could possibly love anything!**

The EXHAUSTED babysitter

Sunday 8/23/09...Babysitter Fun

So this is D writing this entry, E wanted me to relate the adventures the babysitter had tonight. Our babysitter was a friend of ours that doesn’t have any kids of his own and was a little nervous taking on this job. When we got home we asked him how things went and he told us how things went… now this is a second hand telling so all the details may not be exact but it's close enough; these are just two of the stories that were way funnier when he told them. One was when L wanted to read some books so she pointed at the couch and said “lay”, so Mario laid down. She got a book and laid on his chest as they read. She would use her feet to point at the pictures and stuff and then at one point she started shoving Mario off and saying “hurry.” Mario kind of got off the couch too fast and fell off. L thought this was the funniest thing ever so she laughed and kept repeating “Big fall down, big fall down, big fall down.” She then came down and wanted her own “big fall down” so she repeatedly kept falling on Mario's chest, laughing all the way. The second one was that she apparently liked playing hide-and-seek … in the bath tub… with the shower curtain… for an hour. Well, I should say that she was more hiding and finding herself since Mario said that she would say “I hiding” when behind the shower curtain and then say “I found me” when she moved it. I am really glad our child has mastered the skill of finding herself behind a curtain. Mario was afraid to take her out because he didn’t want her to throw a tantrum so she was in the bath for a while… we didn’t get to see her when we got home but she might be a little raisin :). There were some other small stories but writing them wouldn’t do them any justice but they were funny and cute, trust me. Mario did a great job and we are very thankful that he could watch her and let us go to a wedding. THANKS Mario!!

Monday, 8/17/09... allergy shots & pics..

I know I'm a little behind on blogging & photos but I'll start w/today and work my way backwards. This morning I took L with me to get my allergy shots. We were in a hurry b/c I had to get down there and back by 10am when the insulation installation appointment was. L has not been the greatest both times we've been so I'll have to figure out a way to get her to behave since I have to go multiple times a week and it takes a little over an hour w/o any traffic or waiting at the office since it's about 20 minutes each way plus I have to wait in the office for 20 minutes after the shot.

We got back in time for our appt. We had more insulation put in our attic. We're hoping for it to help keep the cool in in the summer and the heat in the winter.

After dinner, we all went on a walk, although we didn't get very far b/c L wanted to run next to a neighbor's dog that has a wire fence. And then she wanted to jump off the curb over and over and over. Finally she wanted to watch one of the 8th grade boys on our street practice basketball.

I've been working on having Elodie wear shorts, capris, skirts, and pants with no underwear and she's been telling me when she needs to go potty.  Then we added the underwear and no accidents so far.  I think she's getting it! :)
D & I relaxed by watching a movie tonight except it was terrible. Don't see the Knowing.

Here's a slide show from the day:

Sunday, 8/16/09...celing fans installation day...

Today was dedicated to installing ceiling fans (w/lights) in the guest room and L's room. D did a fabulous job but there were road blocks involved that were totally not his fault. I had the job of assistant & L entertainer. Let me tell you it's not that easy entertaining her & keeping her out of trouble when she wanted to be w/D where all the action was. We had to try to keep all the tools & parts that she couldn't play with or we didn't want her to loose out of her reach, all while trying to accomplish the goal. We even worked all through her naptime in the room next door, trying to be quiet.

D was all done installing the first fan in the guest room, when the motor didn't work. You could hear it come on, but the fan blades wouldn't turn, yet the lights turned on so we knew it had power. After double checking that it wasn't the remote (read unwiring remote and directly wiring fan), we determined it was a faulty fan (great! not!) so we used the fan we had bought for L's room in the guest room instead. That was ONLY a two hour delay! Then when we were done, D got started on the wiring in the attic, cutting a whole in the ceiling, and mounting the bracket thing that the fan attaches to, while I went to Lowes w/L to exchange the broken fan and pickup takeout for dinner. By the time we ate and finished the install, it was past 9pm so that's when L went to bed since we needed to finish the install & clean up all the drywall dust & insulation that had fallen out of the attic or hitched a ride on D before she could go to bed. End result...one really long day...one really tired D...and two nice ceiling fans & lights in the two rooms. The fan is a really nice feature for our guests (D assures me since he's spent many a nights in there) and both rooms had really poor lighting (only one sconce) so now they're really well lit!

L checking out the new fan in her room. she really wanted to climb the ladder & we told her she could when we were all done.

If you ask Elodie "why?", she'll reply, "cuz" or "cuz..."  When she's full, she'll say "enough" and hand you back the food.  She'll also take some crackers and say "enough."

Saturday, 8/15/09...AAC picnic & pics...

Today we were hoping D would feel up to going to the annual AAC picnic. This year it was up in Longmont at Union Reservoir. It started at 10am so we were on our way a little past 9:30am. It was fun to meet some new people and to see all the adopted kiddos. They're all so cute! Unfortunately, it rained half the time and was really cold. I even had jeans & a fleece and I was still cold (maybe it was the flip flops??). L did really well and even told us at one point that she had to go "pee pee" so we walked back to the car for her to use her little potty. We also got to hear some Korean drumming, see a Korean dragon dance, and see some martial arts performances by some kids. We left in time to get L down for a late nap.

Here's a slideshow: I should have taken more pictures, but what can I say? I'm a slacker...besides the rain & cold didn't help!

Friday, 8/14/09...illness, new friends, & police help...

So yesterday, D came home from work and told me that he felt like he was getting a cold. We had his aunt & uncle over for dinner anyhow, since he hadn't told me earlier, and had fun hanging out with them. After they left & we had put L to bed, D took a sudden turn for the worse and threw up for a few hours, then woke up in the morning, still feeling like maybe he had a cold, but his stomach was fine...so who knows what he had...he had just gotten a tetanus/whooping couch/something else vaccine on Wednesday so it's possible it's an adverse reaction to that, but it's also possible that a cold triggered his IBS, or it's also possible that he got a stomach bug from his mom (he ate her leftovers and she wasn't 100% when she was here Saturday), or it's possible he ate bad fish at dinner (but everyone else was ok)....so end result, who knows, but I'm glad the stomach thing is over and I'm praying that L & I stay healthy.

This morning, I was supposed to go get my 2nd allergy shot (i couldn't go Tuesday b/c it hadn't been at least 24 hrs. since my vaccination & i couldn't go Wednesday b/c of playgroup & Thursday they're closed), but I didn't want to go get something that attacks my immune system when I want it to be strong so I don't catch whatever D had/has. I had to meet a new friend and her daughter at a park here at 10am anyhow so it was nice not to have to run around like crazy to get down there and all the way back by 10am.

We met at a park in town that I'd never been to before, but it's a nice park w/covered picnic benches and the girls had fun playing in the sand, on the playground, in the swings, and the grass. My friend's a working mom so she said she rarely gets to see her daughter play with other kids so it was fun for her to see them chasing each other in the grass and sharing food at lunch.

So onto the police part of the story... We were loading up the cars to leave. I put L in her car seat and then grabbed the keys from her to lean through the front and turn on the car to get the air going since the car was stuffy and just slightly warm. Then I finished buckling her in. She was telling me that there were bees (on the bush behind me) so I quickly shut the door and walked around to my door and realized that the car was locked (w/all my stuff in there as well)! My friend had already pulled away and was turning the corner so I ran down the street after her, screaming "stop!" and waving my hands in the air. Thank God she had her windows cracked and could hear me b/c she stopped. I told her that L was stuck in the car w/the keys in the car. She called 911 and the police eventually showed up. She commented that it was a good thing no one was dying! They didn't have the correct tools and called dispatch for a locksmith that took AAA. They finally said they had a locksmith on the way but that it would be another 20 minutes. L was good sitting in the car for awhile but sometime after the cop showed up (who was really nice), she started crying. She was able to reach her raggie and that calmed her a little. She cried off and on. Then she dropped her raggie on accident and was very upset after that. Plus, towards the end she kept crying and saying "pee pee potty." She even got the lid up on the little potty that was next to her in the seat. It was really sad. It was like she was in hysterics with the possibility of peeing in her pants. I just kept telling her that she could go when we got her out. I wasn't sure how much she could hear us b/c we could barely hear her crying when we could see she was. The locksmith finally showed up and was unlocking my car when another cop (my neighbor) showed up to relieve the other officer that had to go on another call. I know I'll never hear the end of it from my neighbor cop. He was really sweet to L and after she had recovered enough and we determined she didn't need to pee, I put her back in the car seat. I think the whole ordeal took like an hour to get her out. I called my friend to see if she was still at Noodles for lunch and she was actually just arriving b/c she'd been on a long phone call (she'd finally left after she'd waited w/me for at least 45 min.). So we headed on over to Noodles to have lunch with them. The girls were really cute sitting side-by-side in highchairs. I forgot how much pasta L will eat and she ate almost half of mine and then some of her friend's mac-n-cheese too. She also tried tofu but "no like it." Then L shared her grapes & cheese-its as well. I'll have to post pics later.

By the time we got done w/lunch, it was 2:15pm and I was supposed to be putting the stuff in the crockpot for dinner at 2:30pm. When we got back I delayed putting L down for her nap so that I could get the crockpot started first. L stayed in her crib from about 2:45 'til 4pm but she didn't sleep at all.

After dinner, I took L to the last Louisville StreetFaire of the summer w/o D b/c he's still not 100%. It's SO fun to watch her dance. It makes me smile so much. She just loves dancing to the band that was playing. And she gets distracted by her people watching. Then she ran all over the place and had me follow. At some point, I picked her up so she could escape a dog b/c she was saying "no like it" and she put her head on my shoulder. Poor kiddo was exhausted! No pics from tonight's StreetFaire since I was there solo & wanted my full attention on running around after L!

Thurs. 8/13/09...splash park...

This morning I knew it was going to be hot so I thought it would be fun to take L to the little splash pad here in town. We asked our friend Doug & his son Treyden to go with us. Here's pics from that adventure. They were less interested in the water and more interested in the swings.

Dale & Candy came over tonight and we had a ton of fun, as always. Here's pics of L jumping on Dale.
